The history of the orchestra started in 1981 when professor Semion Yaroshevich set up a chamber orchestra within the precincts of the Nizhniy Novgorod Conservatoire. In 1990 the orchestra was headed by Sophia Propischan, Chair of the Faculty of The Nizhniy Novgorod State Conservatoire after M.I.Glinka, Honoured Artist of Russia, art manager of the orchestra since 1990 till 2003 (in this period of time the orchestra was called “Sophia”). Under her guidance the student chamber orchestra turned from a training ground into a highly professional concert group which got independence and the status of a municipal cultural establishment in 1994. The orchestra is one of the essential parts of the musical life of the town. Every season the musicians accomplish numerous musical projects the participation in which frequently attracts outstanding Russian and foreign musicians. The constantly updated repertoire of the orchestra includes almost all from classical music and works of contemporary composers created especially for this group. The manner of performance is very peculiar the characteristic features of which are: definiteness and precision in the understanding of the conception of the work, emotional openness and timbre richness of sound. A high professional level of the orchestra was marked by the jury of the 1st all-Russian radio-festival of orchestras on the radio “Orpheus” (Moscow). The orchestra recorded five discs, two of them in South Korea (May-June 2003) together with the Korean conductor Tael Cheol No.

The staff of the orchestra includes 16 musicians. The art credo of the musicians is striving for permanent improvement, search of new ideas and forms of musical life.
